Pacific Highway Upgrade Woolgoolga to Ballina – Early Works Wave 4

¬†Project description –

The Wave 4 early works package for the Pacific Highway Upgrade Woolgoolga to Ballina project involved foundation and soft soil treatments to ensure suitable ground conditions for the project’s future works. Foundation and soft soil treatments were undertaken under a schedule of rates.

The project also included a design and construct component to design and upgrade two intersection locations of the Pacific Highway to accommodate future site access from the highway for a high volume of truck movements.

Scope of works –

  • Traffic management of the Pacific Highway
  • Foundation treatment using 70,000m3 R31 spec drainage rock
  • 320,000m of vertical wick drains
  • Installation geotechnical instruments for settlement monitoring of soft soils including vibrating wire, bored nested and standing piezometers, inclinometers, settlement plates, data loggers and hydrostatic profile gauges
  • Importing of 185,000m3 earth fill material
  • Geotextile and high strength Geosynthetic Reinforcement
  • Design and construction of deceleration lanes on the Pacific Highway required to facilitate site and haulage vehicle movements
  • Limitation to fill heights of 1.5m per week
  • Installation of HDPE drainage pipes due to soft soil zones
  • Clearing undertaken within Endangered Ecological Communities
  • Significant presence of acid sulphate soils
